We're moving to Africa!

This is my first attempt at creating a blog, so bear with me! By now, everyone should be aware that our family is moving to Africa. Bill is already there, and has been since the beginning of July. The kids and I leave August 12th. Our house is all packed up and ready to go. We plan to try to sell it while we are gone, as well as our 2006 Honda Odyssey. If anyone is interested...

Bill works for the mining company Freeport McMoRan (formally Phelps Dodge), which is the reason we are moving. They have the world's largest copper mine there. We will be living in a small town in the Congo, called Lubumbashi. It is very close to the border of Zambia.

The kids initially were going to be attending a Belgian school while there, that is 100% French speaking. They've been taking French lessons all summer. However, since being there, Bill has found another school that is English speaking. This will be a bit less stressful on the kids, and there was a waiting list to get into the Belgian school anyway. The kids will still learn French while in school, as that is the official language of the Congo.

I have quit my job as a speech language pathologist for the time being. I will not be working while there. My main job will be to help the family adjust to their new lives in Africa. I will also be doing some home schooling of the kids, as they will most likely not learn things like American History and Government.

Our dog Kami is coming with us! We would not have made this move without her! It will take her 5 days to get there, as she has to go through Houston, Amsterdam, and Johannesburg, before boarding her final flight to the Congo. It will take us about 4 days to get there, though the actual flight time is only 23 hours.

I think that's enough information for my first post. Please check back. I hope to have some pictures posted soon.

I received your blog under false pretenses, my mom wanted to know if we had Skype. Anyway, have a safe trip and be well! I will look forward to reading about your adventures!!!

Also if you feel like reminiscing join Facebook. There is a Sunset Mesa group there with over 40 members. Kind of like a Mesa reunion on-line. Donna might be interested too.

Wow! Peggy just sent me the links. I wish you much luck in your new life adventures. I know you will have the time of your lives, and come back with lots of fabulous memories and stories to tell. I have friends who moved to London for 2 years - she planned her pregnancies to occur there because they have 6 months maternity leave. But Africa is a far cry from London! I am sure I couldn't do it!!
I will be reading your blog often ;o)

Take care!
